Many domain registries allow the use of chars not in the ASCII range. Internally
all software works only
with ASCII chars. To make chars like ä ö ü possible, the client software (browsers, E-Mail Clients) need
to convert the domain names containing these non ASCII chars to ASCII chars, the software encodes the domain name.
What does this mean to you as an admin: DNS servers, E-Mail servers, Redirection servers continue to work with
domain names, that contain only ASCII. But if you want to register i.e. müller.de, you need to know the
corresponding
ASCII (punycode) domain.
Example: If you want to register the domain müller.de, you have to setup the DNS server with the domain
xn--mller-kva.de
This tool helps you to find the punycode and the unicode representation of a domain name.
